Step 03 is the only one that cannot be delegated.

Going outside, measuring a shadow, dropping coins into a glass, writing down phrases overheard on the bus — these are actions that produce data only that student could have collected. That's where the workbook stops being an assignment and becomes evidence.

In a study by Louis Deslauriers and colleagues, two groups learned the same physics material: one through traditional lecture, the other through active problem-solving. Exam results showed the active-learning group mastered the material noticeably better.

The most striking finding came from surveys: students in the active-learning group often felt they had learned less — and many said they would have preferred the lecture.

Common questions

Is the Workbook aligned with the CBSE syllabus?

Workbooks are built around OYLA articles, not a fixed syllabus — but the skills they develop (observation, measurement, data recording, reasoning) map directly onto NEP 2020 competency goals and CBSE's experiential learning requirements. Many teachers use them as enrichment and activity-period material.

Do I need a printer?

A home printer works, but any local print shop can print a single sheet for a few rupees. Each workbook is one A4 page.

Is the Workbook extra cost?

No. It is included free with every OYLA India subscription — individual or school.

What age is it for?

Workbooks are designed for ages 12–18 (Classes 7 and above), paired with OYLA 12+ articles. Younger readers can start with OYLA Junior (ages 8–11), which includes its own hands-on activities inside the magazine.
